The Final Gift

A 25-min documentary about whole body donation, following the educators, learners, donor families, and others whose lives are forever shaped by this extraordinary gift.

I have been dying to make this film for three years. Pun intended.

In 2023, I volunteered as a tour guide at St. James Cemetery for Doors Open Toronto. During our training, the church volunteer pointed out a headstone belonging to the University of Toronto. I learned that people who donate their bodies to science are eventually laid to rest here.

Here were individuals who had chosen to give their bodies so that others might learn and help the living. How were their bodies used? What compelled them to make that decision? How did their loved ones feel about it? I wanted to tell their stories.

Three years later, The Final Gift became a reality through a collaboration with the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, thanks to Dr. Cindi Morshead, the Chair of the Division of Anatomy and Director of the Willed Body Program.

Director’s Statement

As a filmmaker, I am drawn to stories that invite us to look closer at things we might otherwise overlook, misunderstand or avoid. Death is certainly one of them. We spend so much of our lives not thinking about it, trying to avoid it, yet our relationship with death profoundly shapes how we live.

Through the people who made this film possible—the donors and their families, medical educators, students and those who care for the donors—I discovered that whole body donation is about far more than the advancement of medicine. It is about trust, love, dignity and the remarkable human capacity to give beyond our own lifetime.

I hope The Final Gift invites audiences to approach death with curiosity rather than fear, to reflect on the legacy we leave behind, and perhaps to see generosity in a way they never have before.
